What is therapy?
Therapy is the opportunity to discuss with a professional the issues that are the most important to you, right now. It can be about a specific concern, or multiple. It can be about the past, present or future, based on your needs.
What is the difference between therapy and counseling?
For all intents and purposes, the terms can be used interchangeably. While therapy can sometimes hold a more clinical perception, both terms are used to describe a time where you have a non-judgmental and unbiased space to explore what is on your mind, oftentimes vent, and work on strategies to improve areas of life you identify.
How long will I be in therapy for?
It all depends on your needs and goals. We will work together to establish what would be most beneficial to you.
What is the difference between seeing a therapist, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist?
As a therapist, I specialize in talk-therapy. I have a masters degree and have yearly continuing education requirements that I pursue. I am unable to provide prescriptions for medication but may be able to provide you with a referral to to a psychiatrist that does.
A psychologist also would provide counseling services but they also provide psychological testing for schools, courts and other entities.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that specializes in behavior. If medication is necessary, they typically will work with a therapist like me to to have talk-therapy in conjunction with medication. Medication is not a replacement for talk-therapy.
